Learn Sophisticated Art of Kamigata Culture “Bunraku”, Traditional Puppet Theater Born in Osaka

The Kamigata Culture Program 2019 'Shinjuu Ten no Amijima' meaning 'Love Suicide at Amijima’, was offered as a three-day special program at Faculty of Literature and Human Sciences, Osaka City University (OCU), at the Lecture Hall, 10F Media Center from Tuesday 20 to Thursday 22 August, 2019.

This program aims to offer participants academic insights into the culture that has been historically cultivated in Osaka, especially spotlighting the traditional performing art “Bunraku”. Professors of Faculty of Literature and Human Sciences as well as three artists representing the world of Bunraku, Tsukomadayu Takemoto (narrator), Seisuke Tsuruzawa (shamisen player) and Kanjuro Kiritake (puppeteer) as guest professors analyzed the attractiveness of universal Bunraku under the theme of 'Shinjuu Ten no Amijima' from various perspectives. 

Not only OCU students but also number of citizens participated in the lecture. Participants were fascinated by the synchronized performance of a narrator, a shamisen player and a puppeteer demonstrated in front of them. They were allured by the world of Bunraku with the three-day special lecture and further deepened understanding of Bunraku.
